Secret identities aren?t just for superheroes anymore. Researchers have found that a protein present in everything from amoebas to people is living a double life. Once it binds to DNA, the protein, called RfaH, rips apart?and then refolds into a different shape, to do a different job.

RfaH is a transcription protein?attached to or freed from a stretch of DNA, it determines if a gene is expressed or not. But once the protein has carried out its task, its helical structure unravels. Within seconds, it refolds into a barrel structure, which has a new role, this time in translation, where it helps the cell produce amino acids for new proteins. The study is in the journal Cell. [Bj?rn M. Burmann et al, An ? Helix to ? Barrel Domain Switch Transforms the Transcription Factor RfaH into a Translation Factor]

The next step is to find out if the barrel can refold into the helix. After that, researchers want to see if proteins similar to RfaH?which are present in all life on Earth?are capable of comparable molecular contortion. Which would mean a lot more bang for our protein buck.

Women who give birth after age 30 lower their risk of endometrial cancer

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Women who last give birth at age 40 or older have a 44 percent decreased risk of endometrial cancer when compared to women who have their last birth under the age of 25, according to strong evidence in a new, international study led by a researcher at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC).

Endometrial cancer strikes the endometrium, the tissue lining the uterus (womb), and is the most common gynecological cancer in the United States.

Veronica "Wendy" Setiawan, Ph.D., assistant professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School, was the principal investigator of the study, "Age at Last Birth in Relation to Risk of Endometrial Cancer: Pooled Analysis in the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium," which found that risk begins to decrease after age 30 by approximately 13 percentage points for each five-year delay in last births. Compared to women who last give birth before age 25, those who have their last child between age 30 and 34 reduce their risk by 17 percent and those between age 35 and 39 reduce their risk by 32 percent.

"While childbearing at an older age previously has been associated with a lower risk of endometrial cancer, the size of this study definitively shows that late age at last birth is a significant protective factor after taking into account other factors known to influence the disease ? body weight, number of kids and oral contraceptive use," Setiawan said.

The study, believed to be the largest of its kind, examined pooled data from four cohort studies and 13 case-control studies. Funded by the National Cancer Institute, the research examined a total of 8,671 cases of endometrial cancer and 16,562 control subjects, all derived from studies in the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium. Results are now available online in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

"We found that the lower risk of endometrial cancer continued for older mothers across different age-at-diagnosis groups, including under 50, 50-59, 60-69, and over 70 ? which shows that the protection persists for many years," Setiawan said. "Protection also did not vary by the two types of the disease: the more common Type 1, which we think is related to estrogen exposure; and the more rare, but more aggressive and deadly, Type 2, which have been thought to develop independent of hormones."

Setiawan noted that endometrial cancer is the fourth most common cancer diagnosed among American women. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2012 about 47,130 new cases of cancer of the uterine body will be diagnosed, and about 8,010 women will die from such cancers. The vast majority of those cases are endometrial cancer.

Setiawan's research also examined whether the association between age at last birth and endometrial cancer was consistent across race and ethnicity. The protective association was observed in Caucasian and Asian women, but not in the study's small subset of black women, and Setiawan suggested this warrants additional study of larger groups of black women.

More research is necessary to determine why late age at last birth might protect against endometrial cancer, but Setiawan notes that several potential mechanisms have been suggested by other investigators, including:

  • Women capable of becoming pregnant at an older age may possess a healthy endometrium or experience fewer menstrual cycles without ovulation;
  • Prolonged exposure to the hormone progesterone during pregnancy may be especially beneficial at older ages, the critical period for endometrial cancer development;
  • Premalignant or malignant cells of the uterine cavity's mucosal lining, which are more likely to exist with increasing age, are shed during childbirth.

"This study shows an important protective factor for endometrial cancer, and when the exact mechanism by which it protects women from getting the disease is known, it can help our understanding of how endometrial cancer develops and thus how to prevent it," Setiawan said.

5 reasons for Spain's colossal economic troubles

MADRID (AP) ? Spain's financial crisis is a lot like peeling an onion: remove one troubled layer and you expose another.

Repeated efforts since 2009 by successive governments to fix the country's problems have managed to undermine confidence in the fourth-largest economy among the 17 nations that use the euro.

A recession is deepening in Spain and a growing number of its regional governments are seeking financial lifelines. These developments are adding to the problems of a government already struggling to prop up its shaky banking system.

Spain's main IBEX stock index has lost 3 percent over the last three days while the government's borrowing costs for its debt have soared to their highest levels since the country joined the euro in 1999.

Last Friday, Spain finally got approval from the other 16 members of the eurozone to access up to ?100 billion ($121 billion) in loans to prop up its banks which are weighed by down by ?180 billion in soured real estate investments.

Spanish officials had hoped a solution for the banks would ease some concerns about the state of the country's finances and prompt investors to stop demanding unmanageably high interest rates for government debt. Such high rates forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek full-blown public finance bailouts.

But instead of easing off, investors panicked again.

On Monday the country's central bank said that the economy shrank by 0.4 percent during the second quarter, compared with the previous three months. The government predicts the economy won't return to growth until 2014 as new austerity measures hurt consumers and businesses.

On top of that, Spain is facing new costs as a growing number of regional governments that function like U.S. states ask federal authorities for assistance.

By Tuesday, investors had sent benchmark borrowing rate for Spain's 10-year bonds to 7.53 percent, just the latest in a series of records. By contrast, Germany's is just 1.26 percent.

If Spain's borrowing rates continue to rise, the government may end up being locked out of international markets and be forced to seek a financial rescue that would push Europe's rescue funds to breaking point.

Here are five reasons investors are scared about Spain:

HURTING REGIONAL GOVERNMENTS

During Spain's property boom, the country's 17 semi-autonomous regions raked in unprecedented revenues from building permits and fees. They windfall to finance infrastructure projects and the ranks or public employees swelled. Across Spain, highways, parks, public swimming pools, gleaming government buildings and airports sprung up.

Now the property market has collapsed and the regions can no longer afford to pay their bills and manage their debts.

The regions' problems have been a focus of investor concern for more than a year, but the fears skyrocketed last Friday when the region of Valencia announced it would be the first to tap a federal fund set up to bail out the hurting regions. Over the weekend, the region of Murcia said it also needed help.

More regions are expected to join the queue, threatening to overwhelm the central government. No one knows how much money the regions will need, though leading newspaper El Pais said they have combined debts of ?140 billion and that ?36 billion must be refinanced this year.

The fund set up by the government on July 13 will have ?18 billion in capital, part of it raided from the national lottery. If more funds are needed, Spain would either have to issue debt at punishing rates ? or ask for a bailout.

WEAK GROWTH PROSPECTS

While one out of every four Spaniards are unemployed, the rate for job-seekers under 25 stands at 52 percent. Emigration by young adults is on the rise, and companies are taking advantage of new labor reforms that make it cheaper to fire workers. The country is in its second recession in three years.

Just as Valencia was announcing its financing needs last Friday, Spain's finance minister revealed that the economic contraction will be deeper than expected in 2013 ? meaning an even longer period of economic pain before Spain can hope to start generating jobs again.

For this year, the government expects a smaller contraction than previously forecast of 1.5 percent, down from a previous estimate of 1.7. However, instead of economic growth of 0.2 percent for next year, the government now forecasts a contraction of 0.5 percent.

BANK BAILOUT WORRIES

The concerns circling Spain's shaky banks intensified in May when Bankia, the country's fifth-largest lender, unexpectedly announced it would need ?19 billion to cover its toxic property loans and assets. A month later, leaders of the other 16 countries that use the euro crafted a rescue package of up to ?100 billion for Spain's banks.

Spain still hasn't put a precise figure on how much the banks will need, denying investors a clear picture of the extent of the problem and whether the ?100 billion is enough to handle it. Those numbers won't start coming out until September when extensive audits and stress tests of each bank are finalized.

Friday's announcement by eurozone finance ministers that they had agreed the terms of the bailout hasn't quelled markets. That's because the government is ultimately liable to repay the loans. Europe's financial leaders agreed in principle earlier this month to eventually make loans directly to banks and take the Spanish government out of the equation. But that shift is a long way off ? a pan-European banking authority would have to be created first and that could take years.

There is also concern that the rules of the bailout mean that eurozone would have to paid back first before other debt is settled. This could leave less money for private investors.

DEBT DEPENDENCY

The bank bailout has only made investors more worried about Spain's financial position.

Two-thirds of Spain's government bonds are held by the country's banks, pension funds and insurance companies ? that's 50 percent higher than last year. This sharp increase is a sure sign that foreign demand for Spanish debt is falling fast.

Market-watchers are concerned that Spain and its banks are dependent on each other: the government is issuing debt, the majority of which is being bought by its banks, only to use the funds from the sale to prop up its banks so that they can buy more government debt.

Spain has so far this year issued ?59 billion in bonds out of a total ?86 billion planned for 2012. But as the banks' condition deteriorates, there is growing concern that they won't be able to buy up much more government debt.

GROWING PUBLIC ANGER

Since beating former Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in the polls late last year, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has been introducing successive rounds of austerity measures aimed at preventing the country from being forced into a public finance bailout.

Rajoy's latest set of measures has been his most controversial ?a steep hike in Spain's sales tax, and the elimination of one of the 14 yearly paychecks that public servants receive.

Spain has been spared the level of brutal anti-austerity street violence like that seen in Greece, but got a taste of it on July 11 after Rajoy unveiled the new round of cuts and tax rises. Spanish miners and sympathizers, incensed with the seemingly endless cutbacks and tax hikes, clashed with riot police who fired rubber bullets, injuring 22 demonstrators and 10 officers.

The miners said cuts in government mining subsidies will leave them jobless, and many Madrid residents joined in because they believe the problems that the miners face are similar to their economic woes.

Off-duty police and firefighters are starting to join in anti-austerity protests by public servants. Officers are prohibited from wearing their uniforms while protesting, but deck themselves out in white shirts to identify themselves, and the firefighters hold their helmets.

If future protests come with escalating violence, that would only make investors more nervous about Spain.

Spain seeks French support as eurozone crisis deepens

Beleaguered Spain sought French support in the face of its soaring borrowing costs Wednesday as Europe's economic crisis deepened with a slump in German confidence and worsening British recession.

After talks in Berlin Tuesday, Spanish Finance Minister Luis de Guindos met French counterpart Pierre Moscovici in Paris as the eurozone tries to contain fears Spain may be headed for a full bailout.

In Berlin, de Guindos and German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble had issued a joint statement saying Spain's borrowing costs do not correspond to its economic strength or the "sustainability of its public debt".

A German finance ministry spokesman denied Spain was seeking a new bailout, saying: "This is wrong, it is not on the agenda."

Storm clouds were meanwhile gathering over Europe's top economy, with data showing that business confidence in Germany dropped again in July as companies grow increasingly wary of fallout from the eurozone debt turmoil.

The Ifo economic institute's closely watched business climate index dropped to 103.3 points in July from 105.2 points in June, a slightly steeper decline than analysts expected. It was the third month in a row the index fell.

New data also showed that Britain, a eurozone outsider but closely connected to the bloc's economies, suffered a worse-than-expected 0.7 percent contraction in the second quarter as recession tightened its grip.

De Guindos's meeting in France came after Spain sparked anger Tuesday by issuing a statement reportedly on behalf of Madrid, Paris and Rome expressing impatience at a delay in major eurozone financial reforms.

France and Italy immediately denied they had joined in the call, which would have likely been interpreted as a thinly disguised challenge to Germany.

But on Wednesday the French government spokeswoman said President Francois Hollande wanted "rapid and firm implementation" of the reforms agreed in June to support banks and growth.

"The president's message is basically that states must have a reactivity equivalent to that of markets," Najat Vallaud-Belkacem said.

Hollande told ministers at a cabinet meeting Wednesday that "the decision of the European Council at the end of June absolutely must be implemented rapidly and firmly," she told reporters.

The reforms are part of an accord struck in Brussels that paves the way for the eurozone's 500-billion-euro ($600 billion) bailout fund to recapitalise ailing banks directly, without passing through national budgets and adding to struggling countries' debt mountains.

But this can occur only after a Europe-wide banking supervisory body is set up, with leaders aiming for that to happen by the end of the year.

Ratings agency Moody's on Tuesday delivered bad news for the bailout fund -- the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) -- by lowering its outlook from stable to negative, a day after threatening the triple-A credit ratings of Germany, The Netherlands and Luxembourg.

The EFSF, which was established with a total lending capacity of 440 billion euros, is to be replaced eventually by a 500-billion-euro permanent rescue fund called the European Stability Mechanism.

Economists increasingly agree that a eurozone bailout of up to 100 billion euros agreed for Spain's banks will be insufficient to get the country through the crisis brought on by a collapse of its real estate boom in 2008.

One Spanish region, Valencia, has already requested help from the 18-billion-euro fund set up by the central government to rescue struggling regions and another region, Catalonia, has indicated it may do the same.

Spain's borrowing costs have hit their highest level since the country adopted the euro, with yields on 10-year government bonds hitting 7.621 percent Tuesday -- the levels that forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek EU-IMF bailouts.

But the yield eased on Wednesday to a still high 7.376 percent. The euro meanwhile gained to $1.2127 after striking a two-year low of 1.2043 on Tuesday.

Analysts said Spain needs either a bailout or market intervention by the European Central Bank to force its borrowing costs down by buying bonds.

The ECB has done this before but it is not clear if it is ready to step in again now without clear backing from the major eurozone states, especially Germany.

European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso meanwhile protested against efforts to cut the 2013 European budget, saying they undermine plans to promote growth and jobs.

In a letter to European heads of state and government, he lashed out at plans to cut the draft budget by five billion euros ($6.1 billion).

New cafe Spicer And Cole now open on Queen Square Avenue ...

?

In a landscape seemingly dominated by Costa and Starbucks, it?s always good to see independently-owned coffee shops opening up in Bristol. Carla Swift?s Spicer And Cole is one such new venue, which opened on Queen Square Avenue in July 2012.

?

?

Remnants of the old The Avenue brand could still be seen on the windows when we visited, but the new look of the venue has given the place a contemporary, relaxed feel that is underpinned by great food and drink.

The cafe, on the corner of Welsh Back and Queen Square Avenue, has a modern, slightly industrial feel with exposed metalwork, low hung lighting and a mix of wooden tables and chairs and more comfortable seating areas.

The long white counter hosts a tantalising display of sandwiches, salads, pastries and other sweet treats, while the wall behind it, covered in blackboard paint, details the hot drinks available?and the price of various food options to eat in or take away.

?

?

It?s good to see local brands being represented, with soft drinks from Barrow Gurney-based Lovely Drinks, six varieties of Lahloo Tea and various coffee options from Extract priced at between ?1.95 and ?2.75.

Those wanting to head in for breakfast (they?re open from 7.30am till 4.30pm on weekdays, and from 9am ? 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday) can enjoy a sausage bap or bacon buttie (both ?3.25) or choose from a range of pastries.

Both of my visits so far have been on lunch breaks from work, when I?ve enjoyed sandwiches from their varied selection, all priced at between ?3 and ?4.50. On my first visit, grilled veg and goats? cheese on ciabatta, on my second, a smoked salmon, cream cheese and rocket bagel ? both perfectly tasty, the one minor complaint being that the bagel had started to become a little stale on the outside after being left uncovered.

?

?

Lunchtime diners can also enjoy a slice of tart or frittata with a mix of salads for ?5.95 (?5.20 to take away), or a salad plate for ?4.50/?4.20. The soup of the day was tomato and basil on the day of our first visit ? a huge portion deemed to be satisfying and well seasoned by my lunch partner.

Sweet-toothed visitors have a vast amount of choice available, including cookies, brownies, flapjacks, polenta cake and more, all priced at between ?1.50 and ?2. The blueberry crumble muffins were particularly tempting on my second visit?

?

?

With so many office buildings in the area, the cafe has seemed to be doing pretty well on the day of both of my visits. Judging by conversations I?ve seen and been involved in on Twitter, it seems that Spicer And Cole has already built up a bunch of regulars, and I?m not surprised. It?s a great little hub in which to relax during a busy day at work ? and the food and drink?s not bad either. Recommended.

SEIA and LSA Statement on Department of the Interior?s Release of the Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for Solar

New rules will govern solar development on public lands.

Washington, DC and Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) July 24, 2012 Rhone Resch, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), and Shannon Eddy, executive director of the Large-scale Solar Association (LSA), released the following statement today in response to the Department of the Interior?s release of the Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) for Solar Energy Development on Public Lands:

?We applaud the Department of the Interior and the Department of Energy for undertaking this major effort to tackle the process for solar development on public lands. We?re hopeful that this detailed environmental analysis will dramatically speed the permitting process and bring more solar online to serve the American people,? said Rhone Resch, president and CEO of SEIA.

?The U.S. Southwest is home to some of the best solar resources in the world. It?s a region universally recognized for its enormous potential to enhance our energy security. Consequently, the Administration set a goal to permit 10 gigawatts of additional renewable energy projects on public lands by the end of this year. The U.S. solar industry is ready to meet that challenge. Several impressive solar projects are under construction in the Southwest right now, adding this vital resource to our domestic energy supply, while delivering clean power and spurring new job creation,? noted Resch.

?The PEIS identifies a process that will accommodate well-sited solar power plants outside of designated Solar Energy Zones and protects the rights of pending solar applications. The Bureau of Land Management must ensure pending projects do not get bogged down in more bureaucratic process.?

?Balancing the growing demand for domestically-produced solar energy with conservation objectives is not an easy task. We are appreciative of the Departments? efforts to gather input from all stakeholders. We look forward to working with them to refine the process for permitting solar power plants and transmission in the West,? added Shannon Eddy, executive director of LSA.

The U.S. solar energy industry employs 100,000 Americans at more than 5,600 companies, mostly small businesses, across the nation in all 50 states.

About SEIA:

Established in 1974, the Solar Energy Industries Association is the national trade association of the U.S. solar energy industry. Through advocacy and education, SEIA is building a strong solar industry to power America. As the voice of the industry, SEIA works with its 1,100 member companies to make solar a mainstream and significant energy source by expanding markets, removing market barriers strengthening the industry and educating the public on the benefits of solar energy. http://www.seia.org.

About the Large-scale Solar Association:

LSA is the trade association for the utility-scale solar industry and represents the nation?s largest developers and providers of utility-scale solar generation resources. Collectively, LSA?s members have contracted to provide more than 7 gigawatts of clean, sustainable solar power under contract to California?s load-serving entities. LSA members develop, own and operate various types of utility-scale solar technologies, including photovoltaic and solar thermal system designs. LSA companies are leaders in the utility-scale solar industry and share a common understanding of, and concern about, the issues facing development of the solar industry. They are actively developing technology and strengthening markets to facilitate significant penetration of renewable energy into the western United States power sector, as well as other states, and regional and federal venues, when appropriate.

Writers-in-residence to lead writing connections with culture, silver ...

Sheth

Daniels

Jennifer Shore | Staff Writer

Week Five writers-in-residence Jim Daniels and Kashmira Sheth will offer writers at all levels insight on? making connections among different cultures and art forms.

Sheth, who grew up in Mumbai, will talk about India?s struggles during her week at the Chautauqua Writers? Center. She said India and Pakistan, the focus of Week Five?s morning and afternoon lectures, hold many similarities.

Her workshop, ?The Perpetual Immigrant: How to Weave Life Changes into our Stories,? will allow Chautauquans to examine pivotal moments of change in their own lives and use them in their writing.

The United States is a country of immigrants, and Sheth said that Americans still have roots and certain feelings that connect to faraway places.

?We all have different experiences with different cultural traditions, and all the details are very specific in different cultures, but the emotions are powerful,? she said.

Sheth said she hopes her workshop attendees will take away a sense of unity in everyone?s journeys and how they converge on the sensory and emotional level ? as well as a connection to the power of storytelling.

Sheth teaches in the creative writing program at Pine Manor College and has published books for older readers, younger readers and children?s picture books.

She will present a Brown Bag lecture, ?Cultural Writing,? at 12:15 p.m. Friday on the Alumni Hall porch and discuss writing from a different tradition but still create an emotional response for readers.

An emotional response is something Daniels will try to channel into his students this week through ekphrastic writing, which is typically described as a response to a painting. Daniels believes it to be a response to visual art.

For his weeklong workshop, ?Writing and Art: Shared Inspiration,? he will lead participants to the art galleries on the grounds to see what inspires writing.

?I?m always looking for new approaches to try something different, and this has been a really productive way of furthering my writing,? Daniels said. ?I?m hoping people who attend this workshop will have some fun with it.?

The technique allowed him to ?tap into something new,? and he said it breaks him out of his normal writing habits and allows him to write in a different way. When writers stare at a blank sheet of paper or a computer screen, they are overly conscious that they are supposed to be writing.

?I think that good writing can sneak up on you, so that you can be looking at somebody else?s artwork and you can tap into your subconscious mind and something filters in that is sort of lingering beneath the surface,? Daniels said.

While looking through a gallery, certain paintings speak to certain people, and sometimes you don?t know why one has caught your eye, so the workshop will help evaluate and explore a question: ?Well, what is it about this piece that stopped me and made me look at it more closely and think about it??

Daniels also uses another form of visual art to tell stories ? film. He transformed two of his stories, ?Mr. Pleasant? and ?Dumpster,? into films, which he will discuss at in a Brown Bag lecture, ?Adaptation: From Stage to Film,? at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday on the Alumni Hall porch.

Although Daniels has visited the Writers? Center a few times in the past 20 years, he looks forward to teaching something completely new at Chautauqua.

?I think the more collaboration among the people in the different art forms, the better,? Daniels said. ?There?s so many creative people in one place at Chautauqua. There?s a great energy, and I?m hoping to tap into that.?

Your Guide to Online Marketing Success by RJ Duncan

In today?s business world, online marketing isn?t just effective; it?s essential

At one time, business essentials were limited to business cards, yellow page ads and brochures. Newspapers, radio and television were used by cutting-edge businesses of yore and still reap huge rewards for big-businesses today. Mass media are generally just not cost-effective for most local businesses. In the 21st Century, it?s clear that the impact of these tools is diminished by the world wide web. We search for products and services online from our desktops, laptops and cell phones. Yet most local business owners don?t take advantage of the affordability and profits available through online marketing.

Like a business plan and a budget, an Internet marketing strategy is essential for modern-day small business success. While a website provides a good starting point, online marketing requires more than a couple of static web pages. Instead, a successful internet approach requires a dynamic and well-rounded web presence that builds relationships in addition to sales, fans in addition to customers.

A comprehensive Internet marketing strategy replaces newspaper ads with banner ads, yellow pages with search engines, snail mail with e-mail, town squares with social networks and sales letters with custom content. The technology is as evolutionary as it is revolutionary, and smart businesses are taking advantage of current environment to trounce their competition.

Tools and technology aside, there are dozens of reasons to engage actively and often in Internet marketing. Here are a few of the most persuasive:

1. When they need information, modern-day consumers go online; your successful internet marketing program will make sure they find you when they are shopping for your product or service.
2. Online marketing has tremendous research potential; if nothing else, companies should engage in online marketing research in order to collect data about their customers, prospects and competitors.
3. By marketing on the internet, companies can reach a highly targeted audience; what?s more, they can reach it quickly, intimately and more cost-effectively online than traditional marketing approaches.
4. Online marketing lends itself to instant conversions. Customers can quickly and easily find what they want and immediately click through to purchase it.
5. Compared with many traditional marketing vehicles, Internet marketing services are both more affordable and more effective.
6. Internet marketing provides marketing power to local business owners; by marketing online, your company can enjoy big-business marketing exposure on a local marketing budget.

Action Steps. Some contacts and resources to help you get started with your online marketing:

Search engine marketing strengthens your online marketing strategy.
Once you have a website, Internet marketing via search engines will help your customers find it. Consider search engine optimization, which will improve your search engine rankings, and pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, which markets your company via relevant, targeted search engine queries.
ACTION: Before you build a web site, use Wordtracker?s free keyword suggestion tool to choose keywords; use those keywords in your descriptions and meta-tags, PPC advertising via Google AdWords and Yahoo! Sponsored Search in order to build search engine traffic.

Select appropriate display advertising and leverage online marketing tools
Display advertising, including banner ads, is a basic form of online marketing. Because you?ll pay for impressions ? banner ads are usually priced using CPM, or cost per thousand impressions ? make sure you place ads only on websites that your target markets visit.
ACTION: Yahoo! Advertising provides Internet marketing services to design, purchase and place your Internet advertisements

Public relations promotes your online marketing image
Marketing on the internet includes more than advertising; it?s also about public relations. Generate publicity online and continually monitor, build and maintain your online reputation.
ACTION: Include Google Alerts in your online marketing strategy. Use them to keep tabs on mentions of your name, your company and your products online; search Technorati for mentions in blogs and social media. And, when you write press releases, distribute them via a newswire service like PRWeb, which allows you to tag your release for exposure on social bookmarking sites like Digg and Del.iciou.us.

Engage e-mail marketing to reach your online market
Promotional e-mails, including targeted messages and periodic e-mail newsletters, are effective, opt-in tools for one-to-one marketing. Send news or send coupons, but whatever you do, don?t spam.
ACTION: VerticalResponse is a popular e-mail marketing vendor that can help you develop and execute a one-on-one marketing strategy; browse its resources page for e-mail marketing research, tips and advice.

Pursue affiliate marketing to leverage online marketing relationships
A collaborative approach to Internet marketing, affiliate marketing consists of advertisements on other people?s websites. When a customer clicks on the ads and visits your website, your affiliate gets a small commission. You can also reverse the process and get profits from promoting other vendors? products
ACTION: LinkShare and ClickBank are examples of companies that provide affiliate-focused internet marketing services, AffiliateScout.com and AffiliatePrograms.com are directories where you can search for affiliate networks based on location, industry, etc.

Make blogging an integral piece of your internet marketing strategy
Blogs offer business owners an affordable and personable way to connect online with customers. Blogging about your business, your industry and your life positions you as an expert, an advocate and most importantly, a real person.
ACTION: For a low monthly fee, you can publish your own blog via sites like TypePad and Movable Type; Blogger and WordPress, meanwhile, are free. Don?t forget to market your blog via RSS feeds; while most blogging software will create RSS feeds for you, online marketing companies like SimpleFeed can help, too.

Get involved in social networks to broaden your online reach
Social networks are the networking component to your modern-day online marketing strategy; giving your company a presence on popular social networks especially engages younger consumers and turns them into brand evangelists.
ACTION: While MySpace, Friendster and Facebook tend to be the most attractive social networks for companies who are marketing on the Internet, other sites, such as Second Life and Twitter, are becoming major players. Still other sites, like LinkedIn, are proving themselves important stomping grounds for B2B marketers.

Photos and video provide impact to your online marketing
Use pictures of your business, staff and customers everywhere you can. Images touch us emotionally and convey messages quickly. Remember that surfers have short attention-spans.
ACTION: Start taking pictures of your business? world right now, poast them to your website and social sites, like your Facebook page.

Release viral marketing to spread your online marketing message
Whether you send a viral e-mail, produce a viral video or build a viral website, Internet marketing of the viral variety spreads far and fast, allowing you to start small and finish big.
ACTION: Consider uploading branded media to sites like YouTube, Revver or Flickr. A video or photo that goes viral can attract heaps of new business.

Generate online word of mouth with consumer-driven Internet marketing efforts
Internet marketing is about interactivity. Give your customers a platform for expressing-and sharing-their opinions online in order to build buzz and goodwill.
ACTION: Customer reviews provide credibility for companies that give consumers the power to do their Internet marketing for them; while many shopping cart solutions, such as Zoovy, now include built-in customer review functions, companies like PowerReviews specialize in them.

Tips & Tactics
Helpful advice for making the most of this Online Marketing Guide
o More than advertising for your website, Internet marketing should provide you with an entire online brand. Your Internet marketing strategy should go beyond just making sales and toward building an engaging online web presence.
o Don?t put all your eggs in one basket. When you?re marketing online, reserve a portion of your budget for offline advertising, such as direct mail, which you can use to push traffic to your website.
o Keep in mind that not all online advertising can be bought; a big part of Internet marketing is building relationships and earning reputations.
o Whether off-line or online, marketing requires a clear and comprehensive understanding of your target customers. Find out who your best customers are and where you can find them online, then go after them.
o Internet marketing is about usefulness. It?s not enough to build a pretty website; you must also build one that?s engaging and easy to use. If you focus your Internet marketing strategy on creating a positive user experience, it will eventually be profitable to you.

Planning to Retire Soon? Create a Retirement ... - New York elder law

If you are considering retiring within the next five years, now is the time to create a retirement plan.? Many seniors say they wish they had planned more carefully for retirement.? There are several things you can do now to make sure your legal and financial affairs are in order when you retire.

Define Your Financial Goals

Naturally, one of the most important considerations in planning for retirement is safeguarding your financial security.? That means defining what you expect your lifestyle to be during retirement, and how your financial goals will be met.? You will want to consider factors such as how you will allocate money from your savings to supplement your retirement income, the possibility of rising health care expenses, and the effect that inflation may have on your purchasing power.

Your retirement plan will need to include a budget and an asset allocation strategy, and you will need to consider how to balance different sources of income and benefits, including Social Security, Medicare, and your own assets.? If you are employed, one thing you can do to maximize your savings is to invest as much as you can in your 401(k) before you retire.? Your employer can be a valuable source of information on how best to make use of your 401(k), and what benefits you will receive in retirement.? If you are married, then you and your spouse should create a joint retirement plan.

Create an Estate Plan

If you do not already have an estate plan, now is the time to create one.? Before retirement, you will want to be sure that you have taken the necessary steps to ensure that your assets will be distributed according to your wishes, through the execution of a will, and the establishment of any trusts that would benefit you and your family.? It is also important to establish a durable power of attorney, designating a person to make decisions for you in the event you become incapacitated.? Through a living will, you can issue specific instructions for what is to be done in certain medical situations.? An estate planning attorney can help you create a holistic plan for the management of your assets.

Retirement is something to look forward to, and something to plan for carefully.

Sakarya, Turkey

Institute for Social Sciences of Sakarya University is pleased to announce ?Middle Eastern Congress on Politics and Society? which will be held between 9 and 11 October,?2012 in Sakarya, Turkey. The Middle East is under spotlight thanks to the Arab Awakening. The latter refers to a groundbreaking chain of events that require radical reworking not only in the Middle Eastern politics but also in the groves of academe, which have largely been caught off guard and oblivious of the new social dynamics of the region. This congress invites students of the region to reconsider and rework not only the highly topical events of the day but also several phenomena that include citizenry, political action, state building, democratic politics, social legitimacy of authority, social justice, social media, new political consciousness, national self-determination and the post 9/11 international politics of the Middle East. While Europe and the US needed several centuries to develop modern political governance and civil society, the challenge for the Middle Eastern peoples is to press on the means of democratic politics in a much lesser time frame and under perilous conditions. Sakarya University invites scholars, public figures and activists of all stripes to join the panels and colloquiums for advancing our understanding of the region. The language of the Congress will be English, Arabic and Turkish with simultaneous translation provided.

Things To Bear In Mind When Planning A School Trip

Jews became known as the Holocaust and has remained the single most tragic event of C.20th European history, than a trip to Auschwitz? Where are pupils going to learn more about the intricacies of Roman life than in Rome? With the number of companies now operating within the school travel industry there has never been as much choice in the range of possible destinations, or in the number of subject led school trips. The breadth of educational tours is evolving, so whether youre looking for a Geography trip to Iceland or a Music tour to China, therell be a company who can make sure pupils and teachers have the experience of a lifetime.

Finding the Best School Travel Companies
As with all service led industries, each company is going to claim they are the best at delivering what you want. So, before beginning your research, its important you know what you want to get out of your trip. Are you simply looking for the cheapest organization? Or, are you looking for an honest company who will give you the best price they can reasonably offer? If youre after a language focused trip, it might be a good idea to find out who the leaders are in that particular field. All companies will claim to be able to organize a trip anywhere, but many specialise in particular subject areas or destinations. Its often useful to have a look at what the company started off doing if they started off only delivering school adventure holidays, then theyre probably going to be more experienced in that field.

What kind of help can you expect?
You might also want to find out about the level of support the company can offer you. Do they have any teacher resources? Promoting your tour can be stressful and the more students you take, the cheaper the tour price. With this in mind, find out how each company supports you in promoting your tour? Do they have any promotional tools? Will they help save you time by providing template letters you can send out to parents?
Similarly, what do they offer in the way of learning support? Some companies provide worksheets or work-books to fill in, which can enhance or reinforce the student learning experience. Increasingly, school travel providers also feature secure blogs for you to use to communicate with those back home. Its these kinds of extras that really make the difference.

Make Comparisons
Its definitely worth spending a bit of time finding a company you think is going to work for you and your group. The internet is a good place to start, but if you find you want a bit more information, it is always worthwhile requesting a brochure. Research is key, so find 3 or 4 companies you like, ring them up, ask some questions, look at their brochures and get a bespoke quote free of charge.

Safety
Safety is of course a big issue for school groups and most companies should understand that it will be a main priority. Make sure the company you go with has been externally audited by an accredited organisation. If youre unsure about the safety standards of the company youre looking at, ask your LEA. You also want to make sure that your money is safe; so make sure the company you choose to work with has been fully bonded and, should anything go wrong, that your travel costs will also be recoverable.

- Name: Izumi Ren

- Age: 18

- Gender: Female

- Affiliation: Hostile towards the Fire Nation, aligned with the group(in some fashion)

- Personality: Izumi was a relatively happy child, she enjoyed the company of her oldest brother, Aoi, and her sisters. From a young age, she was always afraid of her older brother Saburo and her father Tsubasa. Before the incident with Saburo, she was outgoing with most people, and a generally carefree and loving girl. She did her duties and learned what noble women were to do, and fell in line rather well with the typical child. However, after the rape, she became closed off, distant, and afraid of everything but her older brother, Aoi. For months after it, she simply didn't respond to anyone but Aoi, seeing him as her savior and protector. She refused to be touched by anyone but Aoi, and rarely ate or slept, simply stared blankly into nothingness, crying periodically. After the first year however, she began to make a few female friends, her old personality slowly returning. But even to this day, she does not handle men other than Aoi very well, she is still outgoing and happy, but with an undertone of depression, she smiles when around people, but when she is alone, she rarely does. She does not like, nor does she condone, murder(which is ironic given her brother), but realizes that severe punishments must be made sometimes. Her psyche is very, very fragile, and if it were to break again, it would be impossible to reshape.

- Bending/Combat Abilities: None

- Relationship/Past Encounter with Group: Sister of Aoi Ren, acquaintance of Kazuko Mori

- Location: Missing
