Merck & Co.?(NYSE:MRK): Current price $41.40
The firm?has finished a preliminary?evaluation of the impact of the Venezuelan government?s plan to devalue its currency effective Wednesday. As a result of the move, Merck will incur a one time after-tax loss due to foreign exchange of about 5 cents?per share in the first quarter connected to the remeasurement of the local balance sheet at the date of the devaluation. What is more, the company anticipates that the impact of the devaluation on ongoing operations should be roughly 2 cents?per share, spread over the balance of the year. However, the effects of the devaluation do not?alter Merck?s full year 2013 GAAP or full year non-GAAP EPS guidance ranges.
Merck now agrees in principle with plaintiffs in settling two federal securities class-action lawsuits that are pending in the?United States?District Court for the District of New Jersey against Merck, Schering-Plough Corporation and certain current and?previous officers and directors. Through the terms, which will have no impact on Merck?s 2013 results of operations, it will pay $215 million?to resolve the securities class action against all of the Merck defendants and $473 million?to settle the securities class action against all of the Schering-Plough defendants.

Every week, we share the shortcuts, workspaces, and productivity tips of our favorite experts and internet personalities. This week, however, we're giving you guys a glimpse into how we work, and all the tips and tricks that keep our blogging wheels spinning. Today, I'm showing off my home built computers and newfound productivity system to show how I get things done.
Last time we went through this, I was using most of the same gear?except for my six-month stint on the iPhone?but had yet to find any sort of productivity system that really helped me get things done. This year, I've solved that problem. Here's the lowdown on how I work now.
Location: Los Angeles
Current gig: Editor-In-Chief of Lifehacker
Current mobile device: Galaxy Nexus, running CyanogenMod 10.1. I was an iPhone user for six months before that, and an Android user (again) for two years before that. I have a first-gen iPad that's starting to feel a little old and slow.
Current computer: Custom-built, overclocked, water-cooled Windows 8 PC that triple boots with a hackintoshed OS X (for video editing) and Ubuntu (for post research). I also have a 13" MacBook Air (running OS X), a kickass home theater PC, and a home server running FreeNAS.
I spent years trying to find the "perfect" productivity system and the "perfect" app for storing my notes and to-do list, and I recently realized that it was a horrible, horrible waste of time. Trying out new apps can be good, but constantly searching for new apps will only keep you from getting things done. So, I've settled on Evernote for storing all my notes (Melanie convinced me) and Wunderlist for my to-dos. Are they perfect? Probably not. Do they do their jobs? Most certainly, so I'll be sticking with them. It's more about what you do than what your app does.
I used to be a desktop app junkie, but I've pretty much switched to Google's webapps for most of my other stuff (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Voice). I have a lot of pinned tabs. Which is one of the many, many reasons I use Firefox as my browser?it's pinned tabs are so much more space efficient than Chrome's. Sadly, we Firefox users are a dying breed.
As for non-productive apps, I'm in love with Readability. I'm also in love with my rooted Nook that allows me to read Readability articles, magazines, comic books, and other things on an E-Ink screen. I'm in love with iOS' Newsstand on my iPad.
I can't stand working away from my home office. I have a nice big Logitech Performance MX mouse, dual monitors (on top of a door stop monitor stand), a bangin' set of headphones and speakers, and my Rubik's cube that keeps me busy while my computer reboots.
My desk is actually as clean as you see in the above picture. I can't stand having a mess. The only paper I keep around are bills that need paying and other things like that, which you can see tucked under the monitor stand for when I have free time. Everything else is kept away unless it's something I'm actively using, and I reset it each evening so it stays clean.
I'm a shortcut nut. I think text expansion might be man's greatest invention. I use Breevy to automate a lot of my tedious typing every day, whether it's emails, HTML in my posts, outlines for specific post types, and everything else I can think of. I'm sure I'm only using it for 10% of what I could use it for, too.
I also use AutoHotkey to turn everything into a keyboard shortcut, swipe actions on my Android phone, and Launchy to do just about anything else. The less typing or clicking it takes to get something done, the better.
EDIT: I should also give a shout out to Lazarus, which just saved me from having to rewrite this whole post after I accidentally closed the window I was writing in. Talk about a time saver.
Right now I'm using Wunderlist. I like it because it's simple and quick to jot down to-dos, check them off, and keep moving?plus it's available on all my devices. I tried a lot of things in the past (like plain text, which definitely has its advantages), but going back to basics has been the first thing that really worked for me. Partially because I've actually started taking the initiative to use it, which is really 99% of the battle anyway.
My Gunnar computer glasses, which keep me from getting headaches after staring at the computer all ding dong day. I've also fallen in love with my new Grid-It iPad sleeve. It holds my iPad in the back and all my other odds and ends in the grid?from every cable type I could need to my iPod and the aforementioned Nook Simple Touch.
I reply to tweets and email at near-lightning speed. My secret is that I don't prioritize notifications as well as I should. That, and I spend way too much time at my computer, and don't ever turn off my work email. Gotta fix that.
I rarely differentiate "work" music with my normal music, so I just listen to my usual stuff. What that means can vary from hour to hour?one minute it could be death metal and the next minute it could be trance or dubstep or Taylor Swift. I'm a bit of a music junkie.
If I feel myself getting distracted, however I have a solid playlist of instrumental metal that makes it a bit easier to focus (since there are no lyrics), but if I really need to buckle down, I'll turn the music off entirely.
P.S. If you use Windows, you should really try MusicBee. It's my new favorite music player. Possibly even better than Amarok on Linux, which I still miss dearly.
Despite the fact that I have the evening shift at Lifehacker, I work best in the morning. So I'm early to bed, early to rise. Unless I'm on a roll in Skyrim.
I don't like labels like this. But to answer the question: I'm kind of both. When I'm with other people, I'm very energetic and loud and extroverted, but I still desperately need my alone time. If I don't get some time to myself to read, mess with my computers, and/or play video games, I'll go crazy.
Alton Brown would definitely be my top choice. He's one of my favorite life hackers. Also, just about anyone that has developed an app we love at Lifehacker. I'd be particularly interested to see how people in the iOS jailbreak community and Android rooting/ROM community do what they do. Heck, anyone in the open source community too?I'm just fascinated by people that are able to do all this work in their spare time and have jobs.
I have two pieces of advice, actually:
"Get rid of your MacBook Pro, build a desktop, and buy an ultrabook." My friend told me this and I didn't listen for about three years, and ended up kicking myself. Building a desktop and buying a 13" MacBook Air ended up being about the same price as my MacBook Pro was, and way more efficient. My desktop is much more powerful than my MacBook Pro ever was, and my MacBook Air is a million times more portable. Building computers is also super, super fun too. I'll never buy a "power" laptop again.
"Those who don't give a f**k change the world. The rest do not." I'm one of those people who cares way too much about what other people think. I let criticism get to me way too much, and as much as I don't like to admit it, it's a very prevalent issue for me at this job (though my skin certainly has gotten thicker over the years). There's something to be said for pleasing your audience (that's you guys), but coming to grips with the fact that you'll never please everyone is crucial to getting back your self-respect. Melanie had a pretty good take on this too. In the end, only you can make yourself happy. If you're looking to other people, you're looking in the wrong place.
Yes, I still eat potato chips with chopsticks.

Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) - Whether you call them pierogies or pirohis, they are one of the most popular dishes during the Lenten season.
Friday was the first Friday of Lent.
It marked the beginning of the annual pirohi sale at St. Michael's Church on Court Street in Binghamton.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of St. Michael's selling the Lenten dish.
All proceeds from the sales go back into the church.
"(It) is a lot of gratitude of many years of people who have come out of the goodness of their heart to spend a lot of time working for the welfare of the church," said Fr. Jim Dutko of St. Michaels.
"Fifty years ago, no one knew what pirohis were," said Mildred Scheider.
Schieder has been making the pirohis at St. Michael's on and off since the church originally started to sell the food.
Schieder said what started as a small market has turned into one of the largest fundraisers for the church.
Ted Koast, St. Michael's parishioner, said the pirohi sales have helped fund every major project the church has undertaken.
"There are people here who have made pirohi for decades," said Fr. Dutko."They sit here at the tables or in the kitchen doing these things and remembering lots of folks along the way who made their lives a little better."
With many of the original pirohi makers getting older, parishioners said they are looking for the younger generation to lead the way for the next 50 years.

A networking loophole has made it easy to have a peek at what everyone else is doing by accessing cameras connected to the internet
UNIVERSAL Plug and Play was never meant to be quite so universal. UPnP software was designed to let cameras, printers, digital video recorders and games consoles automatically discover each other's presence on a network, saving users the hassle of setting them up separately. But last week it emerged that it has instead been quietly making tens of millions of such devices accessible - and in many cases controllable - via the internet.
It means, for instance, that video feeds from CCTV cameras or webcams can be watched at leisure by anybody from peeping Toms to burglars. Scanned documents can be read by strangers and mischievous hackers with a grudge against an organisation can repeatedly send huge jobs to its printers. In a gift to criminals, CCTV footage recorded on digital video recorders can even be deleted, too.
UPnP's exposure was highlighted last week when information-security company Rapid7 in Boston reported on a six-month research programme. Between June and November last year, a team continually scanned for signals from any UPnP-enabled devices announcing their availability for internet connection.
Their findings were astonishing in their breadth. Some 6900 network-aware products from 1500 companies at 81 million internet protocol (IP) addresses responded to their requests. "About 80 per cent of those were home routers, and the rest were devices like cameras and printers that should not have been internet-facing at all," says lead researcher H. D. Moore. An open router could give an attacker access to its owner's personal files.
As the news spread, tech websites began running page after page demonstrating just what kinds of things UPnP is making available online: video of babies in their cots at home, a dog being operated on in a veterinary surgery, people working in offices, cafes and shops who do not know that their employer is inadvertently broadcasting their every move.
Developed by the global UPnP Forum, the software add-in was first embedded in Windows XP a decade ago - so that a laptop automatically connects to a wireless network printer, for example. "The problem is that the UPnP protocol has no built-in security. The goal was to make it easy for devices to discover each other without confusing the user - to get them up and running," says Moore.
The affair highlights the tension inherent in providing ease-of-use on one hand and security on the other. One solution would be for internet service providers (ISPs) to modify their routers to prevent their subscribers' UPnP traffic being accessed, says Moore. Rapid7 has also written a free, downloadable Windows program that lets people check if their devices are internet facing, notes Jay Abbott of Advanced Security Consulting in Peterborough, UK. "Their one-click check lets you see if this issue affects you or not, so make use of it," he says.
Like Abbott, Boldizs?r Bencs?th at the CrySys Lab in Budapest, Hungary, thinks only time will cure the problem, perhaps as ISPs gradually issue broadband routers secured against UPnP data extraction. "People do not really care to fix vulnerabilities unless it does something like slow down internet access. So I think a lot of vulnerable UPnP devices will remain on the internet for a long time," he says.

A team of researchers have developed a method to identify the cause of infectious disease outbreaks based on online reports about the symptoms, the season, and the ratio of cases to fatalities. Using data from the Internet outbreak reporting system ProMED-mail, the researchers applied this method to more than 100 outbreaks of encephalitis in South Asia, recently identified as an emerging infectious disease "hotspot," to determine which of 10 infectious diseases was causing symptoms of encephalitis, and whether Nipah -- a serious emerging infection -- could be reliably differentiated from the others.
The findings showed that three quarters of the disease outbreaks formed distinct clusters, and that previously unknown disease outbreaks could be correctly identified 88% of the time. For Nipah virus encephalitis that number rose to 100%.
Results of the study are published in the Journal of the Royal Society, Interface.
Particularly noteworthy according to author Dr. Stephen S. Morse, professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and an originator of ProMED-mail, was that unknown outbreaks in resource-poor settings could be evaluated in real time, leading to more rapid responses and reducing the risk of a pandemic. The model provides a quick and inexpensive means to assess outbreaks and allows for the tracking of infectious disease outbreaks in the earliest stages of an epidemic.
"Our approach is especially beneficial in resource-poor countries because of their limited surveillance capacity and lack of laboratories to diagnose unusual outbreaks," said Dr. Morse, who is also founder of ProMed. "Such countries are often where new infectious diseases emerge."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Student athletes need access to health care professionals, better-trained coaches and up-to-date equipment, a coalition of groups recommended Wednesday in a call to action aimed at protecting the nearly 8 million students participating in high school sports each year.
The Youth Sports Safety Alliance of more than 100 groups released the proposed rules, which call for health providers such as athletic trainers or doctors available for every school, warnings about performance-enhancing substances for athletes and the creation of a national registry to track student athlete deaths. The rules also would require schools to have clean and well maintained facilities, and require students to have a physical exam ? including testing for concussions ? before their season starts.
While many of the requirements are already standard practice in many places, the document being presented Wednesday to lawmakers on Capitol Hill is the first comprehensive and national plan aimed at protecting students who participate on their schools' teams. The group is urging each state to adopt the "Secondary School Student Athletes' Bill of Rights."
"In most states, the state high school athletic associations control all the health and safety policies for our student athletes," said Douglas Casa, an expert on sudden deaths in sports and a professor at the University of Connecticut who helped write the proposed rules. "That should scare a lot of people in this room. If you had a family member with cancer, would you seek out a coach for advice? Their opinion on health and safety issues is not relevant."
Among the ideas are requirements that all schools regularly update their sports facilities and equipment and tell parents and students about the risks of playing sports. Coaches would be required to know CPR, have plans in case of an emergency and have regular reviews of how to handle injuries.
At least 34 student athletes died last year, the alliance said. Some 39 student athletes died in 2011 and 49 in 2010.
The decline is in part because 43 states have passed laws that require a doctor's note before an athlete returns to play after a concussion injury.
But while the total number of injuries has fallen, the rate of concussions has risen, leading to long-term health risks for these athletes.
"We need to try harder to protect these student athletes," said Christopher Nowinski, the co-director of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University's School of Medicine.
"Think about this: You get an injury in the NFL, you have two guys at your side right away," the former Harvard football player and WWE professional wrestler added. "We do not provide a single professional medical person to half of high schools. ... Every time we don't have an athletic trainer, we're leaving 80 percent of concussions on the field. The number one place where we're failing them is we aren't getting them off the field."
More students die during high school than in college or professional competitions. Yet only 42 percent of high schools have access to an athletic trainer and 47 percent of schools even come up short on the federally recommended nurse-to-student ratio.
That comes as some 400,000 concussions occurred in high school sports during the 2008-09 school year. More than 7.5 million students played that year, the National Federation of State High School Associations reported.
"You wouldn't put a football team out on the field if you don't have enough money to buy helmets. Why are you putting a football team on the field if you don't have enough money to hire a fulltime certified athletic trainer?" asked Dawn Comstock, an expert on school sports who teaches at the Colorado School of Public Health.
"How come less than a third of all high schools employ a fulltime certified athletic trainer?" she continued.
More than 7.6 million students played high school sports last year and scores more played on club or private-league teams. The increase in participation comes as childhood obesity rates have declined slightly.
President Barack Obama himself weighed in recently of the safety issue, saying that he'd think twice if he had a son who wanted to play football.
"We are a sports-crazed society," said Kevin Guskiewicz, a professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill who studies sports concussions.
Two of his three sons played football last fall and he recognizes the risks.
"There's not a concussion-proof helmet that's out there," he said. "My colleagues think I'm crazy for letting my kids play football."

This isn?t a thrilling facet of company. If you?re advertising concrete items, I suggest that you simply work out drop-ship plans using the products? providers.
NON-TANGIBLE ITEMS
On the other hand, you are able to think about online or even web-based items (songs, diamond ring shades, walls documents, e-learning, to mention several).
Observe that the price as well as work within generating visitors aimed at your website (that is in which the recommendations or even product sales are created) isn?t considerably various regardless of whether a person generate $2 or even $200 with regard to profits. To begin with, nevertheless, $10-$50 is a great variety to focus on from.
Select ?branded products?. Hello, celeb recommendation functions. Better yet when the celebs tend to be the main item. Exactly what will i imply? In order to report good examples, Mariah Carey is actually ?part associated with the woman?s music? for sale. Or even, whenever Robert Kiyosaki talks inside a workshop, he?s the main item. This kind of items market on their own. A person concentrate on getting the actual visitors.
Spend buildings change from 1 affiliate marketer plan to a different. Search for the ones that make up a person with regard to product sales produced as much as 6 in order to 7 amounts of down line, a minimum of.
AFFILIATE MARKETER APPLICATIONS
Whenever buying a joint venture partner plan, your own list will include more successful techniques. They ought to possess clear confirming of the recommendations, product sales and/or family history and genealogy associated with downlines. A number of them permit you manage within putting downlines to help you make a plan work as well as income submission with regard to buddies as well as family members that arrive on-ship.
Because assistance for you, this content supplier ought to help to make on the internet as well as traditional advertising supplies obtainable. Included in this are instruction, videos, sound recordings, pamphlets as well as title greeting card themes.

He was the last survivor of the bighorn sheep herd in Sinks Canyon State Park near Lander.
Bam Bam became a local celebrity of sorts when he began showing up near the park's main road in 2007 and allowed people to pet him. He earned the name Bam Bam because he liked to butt vehicles.
Fearing for the sheep's and visitors' safety, park managers moved Bam Bam to an enclosed state facility near Wheatland in 2009.
Sinks Canyon Superintendent Darrel Trembly says Bam Bam will be mounted by a taxidermist and put on display in the park's visitor center.

Researchers at the University of Granada have designed a set of biomarkers that can be used in diagnostic tests for the detection of dengue and the West Nile virus, two infectious diseases transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. These biomarkers can be used to identify these viral diseases, which affect millions of people worldwide.
The University of Granada spin-off Rekom Biotech is a biotech company composed of professionals from the private sector and from the University of Granada. Rekom Biotech is focused in the design and production of biological material used in diagnostic tests called "recombinant antigents". These antigens are markers of a variety of diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.
Saving Lives and Money
These products can be used in the different in vitro diagnostic platforms or systems. Specifically, the biomarkers designed at the University of Granada spin off "might serve to design diagnostic tests that will help save lives and money", states the Rekom Biotech general manager, Ana Camacho Pez.
The Andalusian company also supplies other services based on the design and production of proteins and other molecular biology tools.
Currently, Rekom Biotech supplies white label recombinant antigens to two American companies, and will start supplying biological material to a German company soon. Their catalogue includes more than 50 recombinant antigens for the in vitro diagnosis of a range of infectious diseases. This company conducts its R&D activities at the Health Technology Park in Granada, Spain.

Canterbury is experiencing significantly stronger wage growth in the construction industry than the rest of New Zealand and builders say the work rates could be even higher than official figures.
At the same time, official figures show that more jobs are being filled in the region.
One leading builder in the Canterbury residential reconstruction said figures released by Statistics New Zealand yesterday could underplay the pay growth.
Salary and wage rates, including overtime, in the Canterbury construction industry rose 3.9 per cent in the December 2012 quarter compared to the same quarter in 2011, Statistics NZ said.
In comparison, the construction industry in the rest of New Zealand rose 2.3 per cent in the December quarter, from the same period a year earlier the agency said.
The total number of filled jobs in the Canterbury region had returned to pre-earthquake levels, Statistics New Zealand said.
Leaders of Christchurch's construction industry were not surprised by the wage rate increases, saying they had been apparent since at least the middle of 2012 and in some cases from late 2011.
Stonewood Homes managing director Brent Mettrick said the 3.9 per cent wage rise sounded low to him.
"The industry has been relatively stagnant for a while in its wage growth, and of course now everyone's under extreme pressure, but also you've had a lot of [firms] coming into Canterbury - some with their own workforce and some without their own workforce. So there's been a lot of enticement between businesses to get the staff."
Wages started to rise for Stonewood when the Fletcher EQR building repair programme kicked into gear, he added.
Fletcher chief communications manager Barry Akers said the company's rates for contractors were established off a notional base rate of $45 an hour for carpenters.
That figure had been kept steady for the past two years.
Jobs that were in high demand included vacancies for project managers, quantity surveyors and labour managers, Mettrick and Registered Master Builders chief executive Warwick Quinn said.
"When there are several people wanting you to work for them, you will generally go to the higher bidder," Mettrick said.
Statistics NZ figures showed that Canterbury's salary and wage growth peaked at 4.3 per cent in September 2011 (year-on-year figures), then retracted before December's jump.
Mettrick noted recent Fletcher EQR comments that between $60 million and $70m a month was going into the Canterbury economy through payments to contractors to fix houses, and that equated to "an incredible amount of work happening in this industry locally".
While the demolition side of the rebuild was starting to wane, the residential phase of the work was picking up "quite dramatically, and the commercial [rebuild] is at its beginnings, so there is a long-term prognosis of pressure on the wage book", Mettrick said.
Leighs Construction managing director Anthony Leighs said commercial projects had quickly ploughed into his firm's workload from January 15. There was some upward pressure in terms of wages including ongoing increases in carpentry rates.
"That's largely to be expected in an improving market. In the commercial sector the pressure hasn't built massively yet," Leighs said.
Statistics NZ figures show that, in Canterbury, the number of filled jobs rose 4.7 per cent for the year to the December 2012 quarter. The full-time employment rate rose 5.4 per cent, while the part-time employment rate rose 3.4 per cent during that period.
"This is the third quarter in a row showing an annual rise in filled jobs in Canterbury," the agency said.

WASHINGTON - Vice President Joseph Biden says the White House remains open to direct talks with Iran over its nuclear enrichment program, but the U.S. would refuse to engage Tehran until its government and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei demonstrated they were "serious" about moving forward.
Speaking at a security conference in Munich, Germany, today the vice president said the administration had been clear it "would be prepared" to meet for one-on-one negotiations between the states, outside the multilateral meetings that have not convened for major talks since June.
"We would not make it a secret that we were doing that," Biden said. "We would let our partners know if that occasion presented itself. That offer stands, but it must be real and tangible, and there has to be an agenda that they're prepared to speak to. We are not just prepared to do it for the exercise."
Any thawing of the chill between Tehran and Washington suffered another setback last month when Iran announced it would accelerate enrichment of uranium that could be used in fuel reactors as well as nuclear warheads. The decision came ahead of six-power talks expected to resume soon, although the State Department said Iranian leadership has continually changed their preconditions and dates.
Also this week, Iran claimed to have launched a rocket carrying a monkey into space. While analysts have cast serious doubt over the veracity of the claim, it dovetailed with continued international concern the country's "space program" was being used as a testing bed for ballistic missile technology.
Biden said it wasn't too late to work within the confines of the multilateral discussions with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, plus Germany.
"There is still time, there is still space for diplomacy, backed by pressure, to succeed," he told the conference. "The ball is in the government of Iran's court, and it's well past time for Tehran to adopt a serious, good-faith approach to negotiations with the P5-plus-1."
In December, Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi told state-run media that his government was also open to bilateral discussions, but that approval would ultimately come from the ayatollah. The minister is at the Munich convention and is expected to make remarks Sunday, although there is no meeting scheduled between the two leaders.
This position on bilateral talks is not a new stance for the Obama administration. But last October the New York Times reported the White House had taken it a step further, with the U.S. and Iran agreeing, in principle, to one-on-one discussions. Citing anonymous members of the Obama administration, the paper said Iran had insisted on delaying negotiation until after the U.S. presidential election in November.
At the time, the White House denied the Times' report that any such agreement had been met.
While the six-power discussions have gained little traction since the summer, international trade sanctions on Tehran continue to cut into its oil and financial infrastructure.
