Church & Dwight 2Q profit falls 4 pct, shares drop

PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) -- Church & Dwight Co., which makes Arm & Hammer and Oxi Clean products and Trojan condoms, said Tuesday its second-quarter net income fell 4 percent, as consumers shifted their spending toward the company's less-profitable products.

The profit beat Wall Street predictions by a penny, while the revenue fell slightly short. But Church & Dwight also projected a lower-than-expected third-quarter profit and full-year earnings roughly in line with Wall Street predictions, warning that it expects tough consumer spending conditions to continue. Its shares tumbled 7 percent in morning trading.

The Princeton, N.J.-based consumer products company earned $79.3 million, or 56 cents per share, down from $82.6 million, or 57 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Revenue rose 3.2 percent to $696.4 million from $674.9 million.

Analysts, on average, expected a profit of 55 cents per share on $702.2 million in revenue, according to a FactSet poll.

James Craigie, the company's chairman and CEO, said Church & Dwight's sales continue to get a boost from the introduction of new products, including high-tech cat litters and musical children's toothbrushes.

In addition, the company continues to expand its presence in the $300 million vibrator market, which it joined in 2005 with its Trojan brand. This year, the company is adding a line of full-sized vibrators, he said.

"We are very pleased with the distribution and sales gains at our entire vibrations line, which we believe has been aided by the popularity of the 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' novel," Craigie said.

Domestic sales of consumer goods rose 5 percent to $506.5 million, mainly as result of strong demand for the company's Arm & Hammer laundry detergent. Higher volumes increased the business' sales by 8.6 percent, but a shift toward less-profitable products and weaker pricing reduced sales by 3.6 percent, the company said.

International sales of consumer products fell 3.7 percent to $121.3 million, as lower European demand pulled organic sales down 2.7 percent. Meanwhile, overall sales of specialty products increased 3 percent to $68.6 million on higher prices and volume.

Church & Dwight said it expects the tough economic conditions to continue for the rest of the year, with high unemployment and consumer worries about the economy hurting its growth.

Based on its results for the first half of the year, the company said it expects to post a third-quarter profit of 58 cents per share and an adjusted full-year profit of $2.41 to $2.43 per share.

Analysts polled by FactSet expect a third-quarter profit of 61 cents per share and a full-year profit of $2.43 per share.

Church & Dwight shares fell $3.72, or 6.5 percent, to $51.98 in morning trading, after dropping as low as $50.64 earlier in the day. Over the past 52 weeks, the company's shares have traded between $37.28 and $59.27.

Fat? We are fit. Get over it, say women athletes | Health Soluzion

LONDON (Reuters) ? American weightlifter Holley Mangold tips the scales at 346 pounds (157 kilograms) and she is proud of being the heaviest woman at the London Olympics.

Mangold, 22, who competed in the women?s 75 kilogram-plus division, is one of growing number of women athletes speaking out at their frustration with the public scrutiny of their body size and image rather than their fitness and skills.

At the 2012 Olympics, a list of top female athletes have hit back at critics who have called them fat including British heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis, Australian swimmer Liesel Jones, and the Brazilian women?s soccer team.

For Mangold, her weight is a something to be proud of.

?Between my team mate (Sarah Robles) and I, I think we both showed you can be athletic at any size,? said Mangold whose Twitter profile has the tagline ?Loving life and living big!?

?I?m not saying everyone is an athlete but I am saying an athlete can come in any size.?

Mangold, who suffered a wrist injury three weeks ago, came 10th in a field of 14 on Sunday, watched by her NFL-playing brother Nick, centre for the New York Jets. Robles came seventh.

The 2012 Olympics have been hailed as the ?Women?s Games? for including women in all sports and from all national teams with campaigners hoping this will lead to more role models in sport and increase female participation in physical activity.

The Women?s Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF), a UK charity aiming to get more women into sport to build self-esteem and confidence, said only 12 percent of British girls at age 14 were doing enough exercise to meet recommended guidelines.

WSFF Chief Executive Sue Tibballs said their research found negative body image was consistently cited as a barrier for girls participating in exercise as popular culture gave out the message it was more important to be thin than fit.

She said this negative attitude over body image was also applied to women athletes at the Olympics who are in peak physical condition with healthy body images but still come under fire for being fat.

EATING DISORDERS RIFE

?Women athletes will regularly get comments about their appearance although men won?t,? said Tibballs.

?This really adds to the pressure on women athletes, many of whom already have a disordered attitude towards foods because they are in a controlled routine where weight is a key issue.?

British triathlete Hollie Avil, who competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, quit high-level sports in May for the sake of her health after the recurrence of an eating disorder brought on by a coach telling her she was too fat.

Tibballs said it was hard to believe that Ennis, poster girl of the London Games with a rippling washboard stomach, was called fat and accused of carrying too much weight by a high-ranking UK athletics official ahead of the Games.

Ennis, 26, won gold for Britain on Saturday.

Australia?s three-times gold medalist swimmer Leisel Jones?s figure was questioned by some Australian media before London, who suggested she did not look as fit as at Beijing in 2008.

This sparked an angry reaction from team mates and an online uproar about body image and what constitutes fit or fat.

?I?m embarrassed by the Aussie media having a go at Leisel, one of Australia?s greatest Olympians. Support athletes don?t drag them down,? fellow swimmer Melanie Schlanger tweeted.

?U can?t judge fitness from looks anyway and how about we don?t criticize at all.?

Jones helped Australia win a silver medal in the medley relay in London.

British swimmer Rebecca Adlington, who won two bronze medals at London, told reporters she was going to avoid reading Twitter comments during the Olympics because so many were insults about her appearance.

The Brazilian women?s soccer team were called ?a bit heavy? by the coach of the Cameroon team after the South Americans won their game against the African nation 5-0.

British weightlifter Zoe Smith won fans when she hit back at attacks on Twitter saying she looked like a ?lesbian? and a ?bloke?, addressing her critics as ?chauvinistic, pigheaded blokes who feel emasculated (as) we .. are stronger than them?.

?We don?t lift weights in order to look hot,? said 18-year-old Smith, who set at new British record at London where she came 12th in the women?s 58kg class.

?We, as any women with an ounce of self-confidence would, prefer our men to be confident enough in themselves to not feel emasculated by the fact that we aren?t weak and feeble.?

Thousands of fish die as Midwest streams heat up

(AP) ? Thousands of fish are dying in the Midwest as the hot, dry summer dries up rivers and causes water temperatures to climb in some spots to nearly 100 degrees.

About 40,000 shovelnose sturgeon were killed in Iowa last week as water temperatures reached 97 degrees. Nebraska fishery officials said they've seen thousands of dead sturgeon, catfish, carp, and other species in the Lower Platte River, including the endangered pallid sturgeon. And biologists in Illinois said the hot weather has killed tens of thousands of large- and smallmouth bass and channel catfish and is threatening the population of the greater redhorse fish, a state-endangered species.

So many fish died in one Illinois lake that the carcasses clogged an intake screen near a power plant, lowering water levels to the point that the station had to shut down one of its generators.

"It's something I've never seen in my career, and I've been here for more than 17 years," said Mark Flammang, a fisheries biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. "I think what we're mainly dealing with here are the extremely low flows and this unparalleled heat."

The fish are victims of one of the driest and warmest summers in history. The federal U.S. Drought Monitor shows nearly two-thirds of the lower 48 states are experiencing some form of drought, and the Department of Agriculture has declared more than half of the nation's counties ? nearly 1,600 in 32 states ? as natural disaster areas. More than 3,000 heat records were broken over the last month.

Iowa DNR officials said the sturgeon found dead in the Des Moines River were worth nearly $10 million, a high value based in part on their highly sought eggs, which are used for caviar. The fish are valued at more than $110 a pound.

Gavin Gibbons, a spokesman for the National Fisheries Institute, said the sturgeon kills don't appear to have reduced the supply enough to hurt regional caviar suppliers.

Flammang said weekend rain improved some of Iowa's rivers and lakes, but temperatures were rising again and straining a sturgeon population that develops health problems when water temperatures climb into the 80s.

"Those fish have been in these rivers for thousands of thousands of years, and they're accustomed to all sorts of weather conditions," he said. "But sometimes, you have conditions occur that are outside their realm of tolerance."

In Illinois, heat and lack of rain has dried up a large swath of Aux Sable Creek, the state's largest habitat for the endangered greater redhorse, a large bottom-feeding fish, said Dan Stephenson, a biologist with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

"We're talking hundreds of thousands (killed), maybe millions by now," Stephenson said. "If you're only talking about game fish, it's probably in the thousands. But for all fish, it's probably in the millions if you look statewide."

Stephenson said fish kills happen most summers in small private ponds and streams, but the hot weather this year has made the situation much worse.

"This year has been really, really bad ? disproportionately bad, compared to our other years," he said.

Stephenson said a large number of dead fish were sucked into an intake screen near Powerton Lake in central Illinois, lowering water levels and forcing a temporary shutdown at a nearby power plant. A spokesman for Edison International, which runs the coal-fired plant, said workers shut down one of its two generators for several hours two weeks ago because of extreme heat and low water levels at the lake, which is used for cooling.

In Nebraska, a stretch of the Platte River from Kearney in the central part of the state to Columbus in the east has gone dry and killed a "significant number" of sturgeon, catfish and minnows, said fisheries program manager Daryl Bauer. Bauer said the warm, shallow water has also killed an unknown number of endangered pallid sturgeon.

"It's a lot of miles of river, and a lot of fish," Bauer said. "Most of those fish are barely identifiable. In this heat, they decay really fast."

Bauer said a single dry year usually isn't enough to hurt the fish population. But he worries dry conditions in Nebraska could continue, repeating a stretch in the mid-2000s that weakened fish populations.

Kansas also has seen declining water levels that pulled younger, smaller game fish away from the vegetation-rich shore lines and forced them to cluster, making them easier targets for predators, said fisheries chief Doug Nygren of the Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.

Nygren said he expects a drop in adult walleye populations in the state's shallower, wind-swept lakes in southern Kansas. But he said other species, such as large-mouth bass, can tolerate the heat and may multiply faster without competition from walleye.

"These last two years are the hottest we've ever seen," Nygren said. "That really can play a role in changing populations, shifting it in favor of some species over others. The walleye won't benefit from these high-water temperatures, but other species that are more tolerant may take advantage of their declining population."

Geno Adams, a fisheries program administrator in South Dakota, said there have been reports of isolated fish kills in its manmade lakes on the Missouri River and others in the eastern part of the state. But it's unclear how much of a role the heat played in the deaths.

One large batch of carp at Lewis and Clark Lake in the state's southeast corner had lesions, a sign they were suffering from a bacterial infection. Adams said the fish are more prone to sickness with low water levels and extreme heat. But he added that other fish habitat have seen a record number this year thanks to the 2011 floods.

"When we're in a drought, there's a struggle for water and it's going in all different directions," Adams said. "Keeping it in the reservoir for recreational fisheries is not at the top of the priority list."

Can You Retire Like Me In 5 Years? | Joe's Free Article Directory

Posted in: Finance on August 5th, 2012

Because supplemental income may be necessary, retired people can pursue a few avenues to make ends-meat. For the elderly who enjoy being out and about, obtaining a laid back part-time job that is easy to perform is one way to gain extra money.

Investment properties are a great way to plan supplemental income for a retirement. During a person?s life time while they work, buying property and either renting it out or maintaining it for resale is an investment gold mine.

Although many people do not care to think about it until they pass their middle age mark, it is never too soon to begin investing money for the future and/or retirement.

One of the wonderful things about investing money in this day and age is all of the options. It is not like it was 50 years ago. You are not limited to a 401K, a few stocks, and maybe some bonds. Nowadays, you may want to consider a Roth Ira.

How much should you invest? Well, this all depends on what you need to live on, and what you need for the future. Everyone is different. While effective ways to invest money are important, the portion you invest is also something to put some thought into. Clearly you cannot invest what you do not have.

For many people, retirement is that light at the end of the tunnel which is worked for throughout the course of our entire lives. Many people believe that retirement is when they live on easy street for the rest of their lives, but there are many pitfalls on the way to this address.

Decide which retirement plan best suits personal needs and choose between a 401K, IRA, Roth IRA, or investment 401K options. A lot of people who work for corporations and companies are offered a 401k plan in their contract with that business. A 401K is a deduction straight out of a person?s paycheck that gets put into a company account that may or may not have a company match policy.

The stock market is probably the highest risk and the highest reward for planning a retirement. Some companies offer investments back into the company and on the market general with money that normally would go into a 401k. If a company is strong, it can be much better than taking a smaller profit from a mutual fund or 401k. However, when investing in weaker companies, people stand to lose their entire nest egg.

Relocate to a lower cost of living area. If you are currently living in a major city with high property tax, income tax and sales tax, consider moving to cities or urban centers, or even overseas, where the cost of living is lower to stretch a small retirement income.

If you decide to rent a house or an apartment, you will also eliminate the expenses associated with owning a house, such as property taxes, utility costs, and maintenance cost for a house, not to mention not having to deal with the usual headaches of home-ownership.
